We know how important it is to stay connected, and how powerful it can be to bond through storytelling. To combat the isolation and loss of connections brought about by the pandemic, we created Audio Book Club: Party Line (ABC)! ABC is just that: a weekly virtual gathering where participants experience the joy of listening to stories read aloud by professional actors and voiceover artists, then engage in a facilitated discussion.
Anyone can read a story, but with ABC, you can feel the story come alive! Our professional Readers are specifically chosen for their ability to bring stories to life using only their voices. In each session, participants get to relax in a low-pressure environment and listen to a short story or chapter from a novel being read aloud. Then, our skilled Facilitator will lead the group in a discussion. Participants get the chance to connect with friends, old and new, and develop their love of reading in a community.
How Does ABC: Party Line Work?
We use Zoom to host this event each week. Participants receive a copy of the selected reading along with their login information prior to each session. When it’s time to start, participants log on and meet their Reader, Facilitator, and House Manager from the Dragon! After a brief check-in with each participant, we prepare for the reading performance. Because we want to emphasize the audio element of the book club, we turn off all videos for the reading portion of the call, then turn them back on when it’s time for the discussion. Find out more by reading our Audio Book Club FAQ.
Join Audio Book Club in May for an exploration of poetry and the power of words to move us, inspire us, and evoke great feelings. In this series, special guest Elyce Melmon will lead participants through selections by renowned poets and guide a discussion following each. Sign on weekly to enjoy her performance then share your thoughts with fellow listeners!
Tuesdays, May 4-25
11am-12:15pm PT, on Zoom

The ABC Team
ABC: Party Line was born in March 2020 when California went in to shelter-in-place, and the pandemic became a reality, the Dragon began thinking about how to reinvent our programs to serve those in various stages of isolation. Audio Book Club was meant to offer an opportunity to seniors in our community (and beyond!) a chance to connect in the midst of being cut off from their usual community. As the project has grown and changed, we’ve continued to prioritize making ABC available to seniors and those experiencing loneliness.
